Temporary clay stabilizers rely heavily on pumping brines that contain monovalent cations at concentrations greater than the critical salt concentration (KCl brine). These salts tend to diminish the performance of other additives of the well treatment fluid. They also produce high chloride levels which are corrosive and environmentally dangerous.
Clay Secure clay control inhibitor can be prepared in various brines, HCl solutions, even fresh water. Coreflood tests on Berea sandstone cores showed that this inhibitor is effective when used at 2 wt% or less up to more than 350º F. When Clay Secure is used in fresh water, the chloride content is significantly reduced, decreasing negative impact on other additives and improving environmental friendliness.

KCl and its substitutes are temporary in nature. They protect the formation only during treatment. Over time, natural fluids displace the stabilizer and as a result clay swelling and fines migration returns.
